NANOOS (the Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems) has set up a handy Climatology App for viewing large-scale oceanic climate trends and features. To demonstrate this application, we show a plot of sea surface temperature anomalies for December 2013. The unusual and significant warming trend, referred to as “the Blob” in the North Pacific is seen extending into the Gulf of Alaska and persists throughout the Gulf today.
This plot clearly highlights the difference between the multi-year monthly mean temperature and the current year-month temperature observation, with warmer anomalies shown in red and colder anomalies in blue. For more details about what you can do with the Climatology Application, visit NANOOS.
